How does an airbag for horse riding work?

A riding airbag is triggered automatically during a fall, either by a cable connected to the saddle or via an electronic system with sensors (Horse Pilot innovation). Within a few milliseconds, the airbag inflates to protect the rider's torso, back, neck, and sometimes hips, reducing the risk of serious injuries. After activation, it deflates and can be reused after replacing the gas cartridge.

How to use a riding airbag?

Setup and adjustment:

Using a riding airbag is simple, but there are a few essential steps to follow to ensure its proper functioning and safety. Choose your size by following the sizing advice on the page of the chosen airbag, note that the airbag is worn very close to the body.

Testing the airbag:

Before use, check that the gas cartridge is full and that the trigger system (cable or electronic) is in good condition. Wear it correctly, put on the adjusted airbag vest and attach the cable to the saddle if necessary. During a fall, the system triggers automatically, inflating the airbag to protect your torso, back, and neck. After the fall, the airbag deflates and can be reused after replacing the gas cartridge.

Airbag activation:

The riding airbag is triggered in two main ways:

  • The mechanical system: A cable or cord attached to the saddle is connected to the airbag. When a rider falls, this cable detaches automatically and triggers the inflation of the airbag.
  • The electronic system: Sensors integrated into the vest detect sudden movements or the rider's fall. These sensors send a signal to an inflation mechanism, which triggers within a few milliseconds.

In both cases, the airbag inflates instantly to protect the rider in the event of a fall.

Maintenance and upkeep of a riding airbag

After a fall: check the general condition of the vest (no torn fabric or damage to the housing or connectors). Deflate the airbag by pressing on the tubes with your forearms.

Put the piston and pin back in place using the Allen key provided. Replace the CO₂ cartridge with a new one (only In&Motion brand).

It is important to have your vest serviced every year or after 5 triggers, even if everything seems normal, to ensure its proper functioning.

How to change your riding airbag cartridge?

You must change your cartridge after each airbag trigger (even if the inflation seems partial). You must also change your cartridge every year, if it has not been used.

Finally, it is important to never reuse a cartridge that has already been used.

To change your cartridge you need:

  • A new In&Motion cartridge (only certified models)
  • The Allen key provided with the vest (located on the back of the housing)
  • A clean and flat place to work

Steps to replace the cartridge

1. Remove the used cartridge

  • Lay the vest flat.
  • With your thumbs and index fingers, slide the two housing latches downward.
  • Gently lift the cartridge by pressing with your thumb under the housing.

2. Unscrew the safety cap

  • Use the Allen key to unscrew the cap located on top of the housing.
  • Stop as soon as the "STOP" indication appears.
  • If you see red, screw back slightly.

3. Rearm the system

  • Gently push the piston with the Allen key until its hole is aligned with that of the housing.
  • Insert the metal pin into the piston hole.
  • Hold it in place with your finger and screw the cap back until the arrows are aligned.

4. Install the new cartridge

  • Clip the new cartridge onto the housing until you hear a "click".
  • Replace the elastic to hold it in place.
