The different types of riding boots

Riding boots are essential for riders: they support the leg and prevent chafing. There are different types of riding boots: tall boots, short boots, models for lessons or competitions with show riding boots, weather-adapted options, and even cutting-edge high-tech designs.

Classic riding boots

Unlike made-to-measure riding boots, which are crafted to fit one specific person, there are also so-called semi-custom riding boots. These more standardised models are available in several shaft heights and calf sizes.

Traditional pull-on riding boots

Traditionally, pull-on riding boots are put on like socks, as they do not feature zips or laces. They are equipped with outer or inner boot pulls to make them easier to put on. However, this type of boot is not suitable for riders with very strong calves or a high instep.

Paddock boots

Paddock boots are generally worn with a pair of half chaps. Ideal for lessons, they offer a casual yet elegant look. Usually fitted with laces, they can be adjusted to fit the rider’s foot.

Riding ankle boots

Like paddock boots, riding ankle boots are worn with half chaps. Also equipped with laces or a zip fastening, they are perfectly suited to relaxed riding outside of competition.

Riding shoes

Riding shoes, like stable boots, are versatile and suitable for stable work and horse care. They are generally fitted with a thick sole and are sometimes padded to protect the feet from the cold. However, they cannot be used in competition.

Different riding boots depending on your discipline

It is important to choose riding boots that suit the disciplines you practise. Different types of boots exist to best match each rider’s needs.

Show jumping boots

Boots designed for show jumping are made from soft leather. This allows the boot to adapt to the position of the leg and ankle while riding in balance, and to follow the horse’s jumping movement.

Trail riding boots

Trail riding boots feature a thicker sole than traditional riding boots, providing better grip in the stirrups. Often made of leather, they are strong and durable and protect against bad weather.

Polo boots

Polo boots include reinforcements around the shin and ankle. This helps protect these sensitive areas from a potential mallet strike.

Dressage boots

Dressage boots are made from stiff leather, providing excellent leg support against the horse’s sides. Thanks to their zip fastening, they are easy to put on and take off.

Stable boots

A good pair of stable boots is often appreciated by riders. Versatile, they are suitable for stable cleaning tasks as well as outdoor rides or horse care. Waterproof, durable and hard-wearing, stable boots are stiffer than leather riding boots and cannot be used in competition.

Boots in different materials

Boots can be adapted thanks to their materials: rubber, plastic, leather, or even innovative 3D mesh technology.

However, they require regular maintenance and are not suitable for stable work.

Plastic riding boots

More resistant than leather boots, plastic riding boots are ideal for children or adults who spend long periods of time at the stables. They are suitable for stable work and are sometimes fitted with a rear zip to make them easier to put on.

Rubber riding boots

Ideal for beginners and/or children who are learning to ride, rubber boots offer many advantages: they are very affordable, extremely durable, and easy to maintain and clean.

Winter riding boots

During cold and/or wet periods, it is important for riders to wear a good pair of boots to avoid wet or frozen feet. Winter riding boots are therefore waterproof and feature thin, warm padding that does not interfere with leg contact with the horse. Some models are also equipped with non-slip soles.

Riding boots in different styles

There is a wide variety of riding boots, differing both in materials and intended use. They can also vary in design and the accessories they feature. The toe of the boot may be square or round, depending on personal preference and desired comfort. The same applies to the heel, which can be more or less pronounced.

Sometimes equipped with a zip or laces for easier fastening, riding boots can be black or coloured (brown or with subtle colour accents). Finally, boots may include additional features such as spur rests, a protective zip flap, or a snap fastener to prevent the zip from slipping or opening.
