A list to review a few days before you leave… and one last time before you close the truck.

Before heading to a competition, taking the time to prepare every detail makes all the difference. From your riding apparel to your horse’s equipment, use this complete checklist to make sure nothing is left behind.

Rider Essentials

Make sure your competition outfit is clean, comfortable, and ready to wear. Pack your certified riding helmet, riding boots, gloves, and protective vest or airbag if required. Remember your competition number and any necessary fastenings, as well as a change of clothes for before and after your event.

Horse Equipment

Check that your saddle is clean, well maintained, and correctly fitted. Pack your bridle, reins, stirrups, and stirrup leathers, along with a clean saddle pad and any front or hind leg protection your horse may need. Before leaving, inspect every item carefully to ensure it is safe and in good condition.

Grooming and Care

Bring everything you need to keep your horse comfortable and competition-ready: shampoo, detangling spray, coat-shine products, brushes, a comb, and clean cloths. Remember to pack your tack-cleaning essentials, as well as a basic equine first-aid kit for minor injuries or last-minute care.

Documents and Registration

Make sure you have all the documents required for the competition, including your rider’s license, entry confirmation, and competition number. You should also bring your horse’s passport and health records. Keep your veterinarian’s contact details close at hand in case of an emergency.

Feed and Hydration

Bring enough water for both you and your horse throughout the day. Pack a few energy-boosting snacks to help you stay focused between classes. If your horse follows a specific feeding routine, bring their usual feed and supplements, or check in advance what facilities are available at the showground.

Travel and Final Essentials

Before setting off, check that your vehicle and trailer are in good condition and that you have enough fuel for the journey. Pack a halter, lead ropes, a flashlight, and a suitable blanket or sheet depending on the weather. Finally, make sure your phone is fully charged and that your insurance documents are easy to access.
