Riding a horse is an opportunity to practice an equestrian sport, enjoy a hobby, pursue a passion, or simply explore nature. Knowing how to ride properly is essential to enjoy this activity safely and with pleasure. Some riders love horseback riding for the emotional bond that develops between human and horse. Others appreciate it as a way to unwind, almost like therapy. From the moment you start preparing your mount, you are already creating a connection with the animal. Once your horse is tacked up, you need to mount and sit correctly. With this done, you are ready to share a great experience together.

Where to Ride a Horse?

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, your safety starts with joining a riding school or a private stable. Riding schools have the facilities (indoor arenas, outdoor rings, paddocks, etc.) and logistics suitable for equestrian practice. They offer group lessons led by certified instructors, with various activities for all skill levels, horses, and ponies. You can learn disciplines such as dressage, show jumping, Western riding, Pony-Games, or vaulting in a friendly atmosphere. They also organize intensive riding courses during school holidays. Private stables cater to riders who own their horses or ponies. The facilities are similar to a riding school but do not provide school horses for general use.

In both cases, you join the FFE (French Equestrian Federation). Your membership allows you to take riding exams (galops). Competition enthusiasts can also participate in dressage competitions, show jumping, eventing, and more. You can also opt for a half-lease, where you “rent” your favorite school horse or pony to ride exclusively or share a horse with its owner. If you already have basic riding skills, trail riding allows you to enjoy nature on horseback, and longer horseback excursions let you spend your vacation riding in a stunning natural setting.

How to Prepare Your Horse Before Riding?

Beyond having the proper riding gear, knowing how to prepare your horse is crucial. Before mounting, interacting with your horse properly is essential. If your riding instructor advises arriving at least 30 minutes early, it is to assign your horse, prepare it calmly, and get to know it. A horse is a conscious animal, and every interaction affects the harmony of your relationship. This begins the moment you approach the horse in the pasture or at its stall. Knowing how to approach, tie, and handle your horse before mounting helps build a strong bond and increases safety.
